Raleigh, N.C : Teen charged in fatal Raleigh crash during police chase on Thursday night, February 23, 2017
One person died Thursday night following a police chase that ended in a two-vehicle crash on Hammond Road near Interstate 40, according to Raleigh police.
An officer tried to pull a vehicle over in Garner at about 6:55 p.m. for a suspected speeding infraction, Garner Police Chief Brandon Zuidema said.
That vehicle was being operated by Kawme McGregory, police confirmed.
The car pulled over, but when an officer approached the car it sped off again, Zuidema said.
Raleigh police said they were called at about 7 p.m. because the chase was headed into their jurisdiction.
When the chase reached Hammond Road in Raleigh, the driver had pulled ahead of his pursuers far enough that they lost sight of him, Zuidema said. They next saw the car when they got to the site of the wreck, he said.
McGregory’s vehicle was traveling at an estimated 90 mph when it slammed into a white passenger van that was turning onto Hammond Road.
McGregory, 18, is in custody and is being treated at Wake Med, Zuidema said. McGregory’s injuries are serious but not life threatening, Raleigh police said.
A passenger in McGregory’s vehicle, Shada Sahquea Taylor, 25, of Raleigh was killed, police said.
The driver of the white passenger van was identifieed as Shaun Dontay Jackson, 36, of Raleigh.
In the van, a 14-year-old girl had serious injuries and is listed in critical condition.
A 10-year-old boy and Jackson both had minor injuries, police said.
McGregory has been charged with driving while impaired but more charges are pending.
He was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle in September 2016 and was also arrested on drug charges in June 2016.
