A motorcyclist died Monday night at York Hospital following a crash between the bike he was riding and a pickup truck he reportedly rear-ended, according to York County Coroner Pam Gay.
Gay wrote in a news release that at about 9:48 p.m., William Benkert, 56, of the 4800 block of Lehman Road, was on his way to work when traffic suddenly slowed in the 900 block of Loucks Road, Route 30, in York.
"After the slowing of traffic, Benkert reportedly struck the back of a pickup truck with his motorcycle," Gay wrote. "Benkert was not wearing a helmet."
He was unresponsive at the scene and was taken to York Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:32 p.m. His cause and manner of death are pending an investigation by York City Police, Gay wrote.
"An autopsy may or may not be scheduled after additional crash reconstruction details are determined," according to Gay.
Benkert's family was notified, the coroner stated.
Police have not yet released information on the crash.
