Baltimore, MD : Man dies following Pasadena motorcycle crash on Friday afternoon, August 12, 2016

A 22-year-old man is dead after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a sport utility vehicle Friday afternoon in Pasadena.

Anne Arundel police identified the deceased Monday morning as Robert Wayne Purdham, of Bodkin Avenue in Pasadena. Purdham had been taken on Friday afternoon to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he later died, police said.

Witnesses reported seeing Purdham driving a 2011 Honda CBR1000 motorcycle westbound on Mountain Road near Loblolly Lane at a high rate of speed shortly before the accident. Witnesses told police the motorcycle was illegally passing cars in the center turn lane when it struck a 2009 Honda CR-V SUV that was pulling out of a nearby driveway onto westbound Mountain Road.

The driver of the SUV, identified by police as Anna G. Upperman, 78, of Magothy Beach Road, received minor injuries in the crash.

Police said Purdham was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Preliminarily, the primary cause of the crash appears to be excessive speed and driving in a center turn lane on the part of the motorcycle, police said

Purdham was scheduled to appear in Anne Arundel District Court in Annapolis this Friday for a speeding ticket he received in May, according to online court records.

A Maryland State Police trooper allegedly caught him driving 79 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone in the area of eastbound Route 50 and Route 665 near Annapolis, according to online court records.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a contributing factor in the accident, police said. The crash remains under investigation.

Any criminal charges are pending review by the county State's Attorney's Office.
