Rutherford County, TN : Two people were transported to hospitals in a violent multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 24 on Tuesday morning October 7th 2014
Two people were transported to local hospitals following a violent multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 24 in Rutherford County Tuesday morning.
It happened before 6 a.m. at mile marker 71 approximately one mile east of the Almaville Road exit.
A truck driver on the scene told News 2 he lost control and spun into the median after he was hit by the driver of a red vehicle while traveling westbound on I-24.
In the process, the semi struck a white pickup truck causing it to spin out of control, across the median and into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes.
The driver of the pickup truck got out of his vehicle and walked across the median to the 18-wheeler.
Moments later, the man's pickup truck was hit head-on by a vehicle traveling eastbound.
The impact of the crash flipped the eastbound vehicle onto its side and firefighters had to use jacks and air bags to remove the driver.
The driver was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the crash could've been much worse.
The driver of the white pickup truck knew he was in a bad situation and got out of his vehicle to safety. He was still transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the semi and driver of the red car were not seriously injured and did not require transport.
Both east and westbound lanes were closed whiles crews cleared the scene.
The interstate reopened by about 7:30 a.m.
