Polk County, FL : Three family members killed in head-on-crash On Wednesday December 23 2015
Three family members from Seffner driving to Avon Park and Sebring for the holidays are believed to have died in a fiery crash late Wednesday in Polk County.
Jim Alan Bass Jr. was driving a Chrysler Pacifica east on U.S. 98 about 11:15 p.m. when a westbound Toyota 4Runner veered into the eastbound lanes, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. After a near head-on collision, the Pacifica burst into flames and the 4Runner rolled over, ejecting the driver.
All three people in the Pacifica and the driver of the 4Runner died.
Of the men in the Pacifica, the Sheriff's Office has only officially identified Bass, 23, of Seffner because he had a driver's license on him that was recovered. The other two men were tentatively identified as Bass' brother, Joshua Bass, 24, and cousin, Casey Baynard, 41. Deputies said they will need to use dental records to officially identify the men.
The driver of the 4Runner, 23-year-old Christian Bautista of Frostproof, was pronounced dead at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. Deputies said he was not wearing a seat belt.
The Bass brothers shared a home with Baynard in Seffner, according to Jonathan Aaronson, 42, a neighbor and family spokesman. The men also lived with the Bass' sister, who Aaronson said acted more like their mother. She deferred all comments to Aaronson on Thursday.
Aaronson said the three men left together borrowing the sister's car to travel to their hometown. Deputies said they were going to visit their grandmother in Sebring.
Both vehicles in the crash were ravaged by flames and left barely recognizable.
Aaronson said it wasn't until he saw photos of the cars on television news that it set in that his three best friends wouldn't be returning. He couldn't believe the crash happened.
Especially with it being so close to the holidays," he said.
The three had grown to be like his family over the last five years. They had cookouts and fires for one another's birthdays and cheered on Florida State University football together.
When Aaronson's septic tank was acting up, Jim Bass came over to help dig up the dirt to take a look. When his lawn mower broke, Joshua Bass was there to help cut his 1-acre plot.
They'd do anything for me, and I'd do anything for them," he said.
Aaronson set up a GoFundMe site for the family Thursday because the men didn't have insurance. He said the men worked hard, mainly in construction, to help support their families.
Both brothers left behind children, he said. Jim Bass, or "JJ," had a 2-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter. Joshua Bass had a 5-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, according to the GoFundMe page.
