West Jordan, UT : Man dies following fiery car crash in West Jordan on Wednesday, December 3, 2014
Despite efforts of passers-by and police, a man who was trapped in his burning car after it crashed into a pole in West Jordan has died.
Police confirmed Thursday that the driver, Lucas Nunez-Manriquez, 45, of Kearns, succumbed to the injures he suffered in the accident near 3400 W. 9000 South at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday.
Investigators are still unsure of why he crashed, said West Jordan police Sgt. Dan Roberts. The car had caught fire after hitting the pole.
Officer Walter Bockholt said passers-by were trying to put out the flames with fire extinguishers and water when he arrived.
"We broke some of the windows," he said, "The car was filling with smoke."
The officer crawled through a back passenger window, hoping to move the seat to free Nunez-Manriquez, but was unable to get it to budge. Bockholt then stabilized his neck and head to make it easier for him to breathe.
The man was extricated after rescue crews removed a door with the jaws of life. Nunez-Manriquez was transported to Jordan Valley Hospital, where he later died.
Bockholt was treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital and released late Wednesday evening.
