Cookeville, TN : A police pursuit ended in the death of the driver who fled police and injured three officers on April, Thursday 13th 2017
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into a police pursuit that ended in the death of the driver who fled police and injured three officers.
The chase began about 4:30 p.m. when police in DeKalb County attempted to stop a pickup truck hauling a trailer, according to the TBI.
“The driver of the vehicle refused to stop, and the pursuit continued on into White County,” a TBI release stated.
Deputies with the White County Sheriff’s Department and officers with the Sparta Police Department pursued the vehicle while it continued north on Highway 111.
“The driver of the truck crashed into several of the law enforcement vehicles, hitting them on the side, and from behind,” the TBI release states.
“As the driver continued down the road, two officers, one with the White County Sheriff’s Office, and one with the Sparta Police Department, fired shots toward the truck.
“The truck, still hauling the trailer, veered off the highway, went down an embankment, and lodged in the tree line. The driver of the vehicle is deceased.”
The driver’s identity and cause of death were not available this morning.
He may be in his early to mid-30s and is not believed to be a resident of the area in which he was traveling, according to Bryant Dunaway, District Attorney for the 13th Judicial District.
Dunaway said the officers who were injured are being treated at the Sparta hospital and are expected to recover from their injuries.
