Nantucket,MA : Two injured in Surfside construction accident on Monday, 7th May 2018
Two island men were injured at a Surfside Road building site when a second-floor gable-end wall fell on them while it was being raised for installation just after noon Monday.
The men, one in his 20s and the other in his 30s, were freed from under the wall by co-workers before first responders arrived on scene, Nantucket firefighter and EMT Christian Ray said.
“There were definitely serious injuries, but they were alert and taking when we arrived,” Ray said. “They were in pain.”
The accident occurred on the second floor of the unfinished building and because the stairs had not yet been built, the two men were brought to ground level by a scissor lift with a dumpster on top used by the contractor to bring supplies up and refuse down on the construction site.
“I was pleased with the rescue efforts and thought it went smoothly,” Ray said. “Everyone was willing to help. The police were there to assist and the guys working on the site all came together to help these two guys.”
The names of the construction workers and their conditions were not released, but Ray said they were both from Nantucket. Emergency radio transmissions indicated one of the men may have suffered a broken femur.
The Nantucket Building Department was also called to the scene to investigate, Ray said.
