Nogales, AZ : Three people killed multi-vehicle collision Interstate 10 in Tucson on Tuesday October 18th 2016

Rio Rico woman was among three people killed as a result of a multi-vehicle collision Tuesday on Interstate 10 in Tucson.

Tina Totty, 46, died at Banner University Medical Center after sustaining injuries in the crash that occurred at around 8 a.m. Tuesday near Milepost 253, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

A 27-year-old man from Rio Rico was also involved in the crash but was not injured, DPS said.

An agency spokesman said a Mack commercial truck, driven by Roberto Monge, 33, of Tucson, was traveling westbound on Interstate 10 in the outside lane of traffic when it failed to stop for traffic that had backed up onto the interstate from the Ruthrauff Road exit. The truck struck the rear end of a Suzuki passenger vehicle driven by Tucson residents Abril Castillo, 41, and her daughter, 12. Castillo died at the scene and her daughter died later at Banner UMC.

The truck’s collision with the Suzuki set off a chain reaction involving five additional passenger vehicles and a commercial box truck, DPS said. The vehicles included a Chevy pickup driven by Totty and an International box truck driven by the Rio Rico man.

The woman driver of a Hyundai passenger vehicle, who was taken to Banner UMC along with Totty and the 12-year-old girl, was treated for unspecified injuries. In addition to the truck driver from Rio Rico, three other people involved in the wreck were uninjured, DPS said.
