Orlando, FL : Man who caused fatal crash was driving drunk, troopers say on April 28th 2014
Eduardo Medina's welcome mat reads "go away" and no one answered the door at his South Orange County home on Monday.
Medina, 45, is accused of driving drunk and hitting a car from behind on John Young Parkway. Luis Gil, 57, was killed in the crash.
His neighbor, who asked us not to show her face, was visibly stunned and upset when we told her what Medina is accused of. She describes him as an ideal neighbor.
A surveillance camera captured the bright flash just out of frame when Medina's car struck the one driven by Gil. His daughter described the loss caused by Medina's alleged actions.
"He took a big part of not just our lives but other people's lives," Priscilla Gil said. "He was a great man."
After the crash, troopers arrested Medina on suspicion of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. They said he refused to give them breath or urine samples, which could have provided evidence to back up their belief he was driving drunk.
Thanks to a change in Florida law as of July, they had to get a warrant before they could draw his blood.
"Getting a warrant puts an extra burden on our officers who are already processing the scene, getting information," said Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes.
