New Castle, IN : Woman dies in a car crash near County Roads 350 East and 300 South on Sunday evening, April 24, 2016
A New Castle woman died Sunday evening following a one-car accident near County Roads 350 East and 300 South. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash.
Megan Hughes, 24, was a passenger in a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Dusty W. Dunaway, 24, Milton, according to a report from the Henry County Sheriff’s Department. Dunaway told medics he consumed half a pint of alcohol and was driving.
The accident occurred just before 9 p.m. in the 3000 block of South County Road 350 East.
When officers arrived, they saw Dunaway kneeling beside Hughes, who was lying on the ground.
Dunaway told police both he and Hughes were drunk and that neither of them were wearing seatbelts.
Hughes was ejected from the vehicle, which rolled about four times before coming to rest in a nearby field, the report said.
Tire tracks show that the vehicle went off the road on the west side on County Road 350 East.
Dunaway’s driver’s license was suspended at the time of the accident, according to Henry County Dispatch.
He was taken to Henry County Hospital for treatment and agreed to a blood draw before being flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Medical staff attempted to fly Hughes away for treatment, but her condition worsened and she was returned to Henry County Hospital and pronounced dead due to internal bleeding.
A witness told police the vehicle was traveling very fast before it wrecked.
Monday morning, Dunaway was not listed as a patient at St. Vincent, nor had he been arrested in relation to the case. Toxicology results are pending.
