Teen bicyclist critical after crash in Apopka

A 17-year-old bicyclist was hospitalized after he was hit by a van on Rock Springs Road near Faye Street in Apopka, troopers say.

The teen boy suffered critical injuries in the crash that happened in front of Rock Springs Elementary School about 6:50 p.m. Saturday.

The name of the teen has not been released.

Troopers say 81-year-old Austin Alfrey was headed south on Rock Springs Road in the left lane just as the teen was biding his bike through a marked crosswalk.

Alfrey told troopers he never saw the boy. The teen was thrown from his bike and was rushed to Arnold Palmer hospital for Children to treat his injuries.
