1 killed, 1 hurt when motorcycle rear-ends car on Loop 101 in E. Valley
One person died as the result of a crash involving a motorcycle that forced the closure of northbound Loop 101 at McKellips Road for a time Tuesday morning.
The motorcyclist rear-ended a car, according to Department of Public Information spokesman Raul Garcia.The collision is a result of unsafe lane usage," Garcia said in an email to media outlets. "The passenger vehicle swerved to avoid rear-ending slower traffic; the motorcycle rear-ended the passenger vehicle."It happened between McKellips and McDowell roads near Big Surf Waterpark.The motorcyclist was "critically injured," Garcia said. Robert Charles Heine, 51, of Apache Junction, later died at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center.The driver in the car that was rear-ended suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, as well.No other details about the wreck of the victims were immediately available.While the on-scene investigation was going on, traffic was being taken off the freeway at McKellips Road, causing a major backup. Slowing went all the way back to the Loop 202 Freeway.
