Nashville,TN : Video shows frantic moments after I-40 motorcycle crash on May, Monday 7th 2018
Cell phone video captured by a News4 viewer showed the frantic moments after a motorcycle crash on Interstate 40 on Monday morning.
Metro Police confirmed to News4 the crash involved the motorcycle driver going through a pothole.
Robert Gales witnessed the two motorcyclists, a male and female, hit a large pothole in the middle of the lanes. He recorded video in the aftermath of the accident on I-40 East before the Fesslers Lane exit.
“I was hoping I wasn’t going to run over them,” Gales said. “Then when you see somebody flying through the air like that and hit the asphalt, I was wondering if she was still living.”
Metro Police said the female biker was in critical condition after the crash but is now in stable condition. The other biker, her husband, was not injured.
Immediately after the crash, Tennessee Department of Transportation crews shut down all four eastbound lanes of I-40 to repair the pothole.
TDOT spokesperson B.J. Doughty told News4 it was possible the pothole was created, or recreated, by heavy rains over the weekend.
“We don’t know exactly when that pothole formed or if it has been patched and it popped out with the rain this weekend,” Doughty said. “Actually we are about to resurface that entire stretch of interstate this summer.”
