Satsuma, FL : 2 dead, 6 injured after head-on crash on U.S. 17 in Putnam County on Thursday evening, February 9, 2017

Two people are dead and a half dozen more injured after a head-on crash on U.S. 17 Thursday evening in Putnam County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said a Hyundai Sonata driven by Barbara J. Armstrong, 35, of Hastings was heading north near Horse Landing Road about 7:45 p.m. when it crossed into the path of a Ford Expedition.

Armstrong and her passenger, 49-year-old Ronnie N. Cochran of Satsuma, died, according to the Highway Patrol.

Neither was wearing a seatbelt.

The sports-utility vehicle, driven by 32-year-old Josephine Reeves of Palatka, was filled with children whose ages range from 2 to 18 years old, troopers said. All were hurt in the crash, with Reeves and a 2-year-old boy suffering the most severe injuries, according to a crash report. Everyone inside the SUV was buckled in.
