Lihue, HI : Critical crash closes Kaumuali'i Hwy in Kaumakani early Saturday morning, September 17, 2016

Kaumuali‘i Highway in Kaumakani was closed for several hours following a critical traffic crash that occurred early Saturday morning.

At approximately 2:40 a.m., a Mazda sedan was heading east on the highway, when it apparently crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Toyota sedan head-on.

The 36-year-old male occupant of the Toyota sedan, of Kekaha, was initially transported to Wilcox Hospital. He was then medevaced to Queen’s Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

The 39-year-old male driver of the Mazda and his 47-year-old female passenger, both from Kaumakani, were also transported to Wilcox Hospital with serious injuries.

Police closed the highway in both directions until approximately 6:45 a.m. while traffic investigators conducted an on-scene investigation.
