Lansing, MI : Eastpointe girl ejected from car, killed in I-75 crash on Friday, 16th September 2016
A 10-year-old girl from Eastpointe has died from injuries she suffered in a car crash on Interstate 75 in Oakland County, according to Michigan State Police.
The girl was ejected from the 2009 Pontiac G6 that she was a passenger in when it was struck from behind and went up the embankment, said F/Lt. Mike Shaw. Alcohol was a factor in the incident, which is still being investigated, he added.
“It’s a shame about this girl,” Shwaw said Sunday. “There are two things involved here. First, she wasn’t belted in to her seat, which is never good. And secondly, we had alcohol use involved.”
The accident happened about 11:15 p.m. Friday when troopers from the Metro North post were called to respond to the two-vehicle crash on southbound I-75 near Interstate 696 in Royal Oak.
Troopers found a 2010 Dodge Dakota pickup truck had struck the Pontiac G6 in the rear end, forcing it up onto the embankment. The Pontiac G6 then hit the bridge, ejected the girl onto the freeway.
Police said the pickup truck turned over on its side and came to rest on the right shoulder of the freeway.
All of the passengers of both vehicles were transported to a local hospital for treatment of “serious” injuries,” Shaw said in a news release. The Eastpointe girl was pronounced dead at 7 a.m. Saturday, he said.
A 23-year-old Harper Woods woman who was driving the Pontiac G6 is still hospitalized in critical condition. Shaw would elaborate on what her relationship is to the child.
The child’s name was not released.
All of the others involved in the accident are listed in good and stable condition or have been released from the hospital, Shaw said.
The male driver of the pickup may have been under the influence of alcohol.
The freeway was closed for several hours as troopers collected information at the scene.
Shaw said charges have not yet been filed as troopers have the accident still under investigation.
