Glynn County, GA : Three killed in head-on crash between semi and car near port entrance in Glynn County on Wednesday, July 23, 2014
The accident, which involved a semi tractor-trailer and a passenger car, occurred near the entrance to the port facilities on U.S. 17 South, Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said.
Brunswick residents Benjamin Nelson and Christopher Wiggins and Jacksonville resident William Hester, all 23, died when the Subaru Impreza driven by Nelson collided with the semi tractor-trailer driven by Robert Lowe of Alabama, Georgia State Patrol Trooper 1st Class Ty Brooks said.
Nelson was in the southbound lane and was turning left into the port facilities on Joe Frank Harris Boulevard when the collision occurred. Lowe, traveling north, was hauling 49,000 pounds of fertilizer and didn’t have time to stop, Brooks said.
“He hit the passenger side when the Subaru turned left in front of him,” Brooks said. “There were no pre-impact skidmarks from either vehicle.”
Brooks said troopers will return to the scene at the port facilities on Colonels Island Thursday to assess the scene and finish their accident report.
No charges will be filed against Lowe, who sustained minor injuries but refused treatment, Brooks said.
