Pike County, PA : 55 year-old New Jersey man died in a crash that closed Interstate 84 westbound on Thursday night, September 11, 2014
A New Jersey man died in a crash Thursday night that closed Interstate 84 westbound in Pennsylvania for almost two hours.
Peter Kyreakakis, 55, of Hawthorne, New Jersey, was pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Deputy Coroner Chris Brighton.
State police at Blooming Grove, Pa., said the crash occurred as Kyreakakis and Robert J. Portice, 57, of Honesdale, Pa., were driving their vehicles westbound on I-84 at mile marker 41.7 in Dingman Township, Pa.
Traffic was restricted to the left lane in that area due to construction. Kyreakakis was initially stopped on the left shoulder at an angle to the guiderail, police said. As Portice had just about passed Kyreakakis on the right, Kyreakakis began to accelerate and eventually passed Portice on the left shoulder, side-swiping the left side of Portice's vehicle.
Kyreakakis continued traveling westbound and passed a tractor-trailer on the left, police said. After passing the tractor-trailer, Kyreakakis veered to the right and crossed both lanes of travel, where it struck a 2012 Volvo S60 that was parked on the right shoulder.
The force of the impact caused Kyreakakis' vehicle to roll over, and it came to rest on its roof facing southwest, police said.
The impact forced the Volvo into the rear of a 2003 GMC Envoy that was parked in front of the Volvo. The Volvo and GMC belonged to construction workers in the area.
Kyreakakis' vehicle, and 1991 Chrysler LeBaron, and the Volvo were towed from the scene, police said.
Police were assisted at the scene by Milford, Pa., Fire and Rescue.
