North Platte, NE : Semi spills acid in three-vehicle wreck on highway on Monday, July 10, 2017

Multiple fire and rescue departments, and at least three Hazmat trucks responded to a three-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 83 North on Monday night, after a semi-trailer truck spilled 330 gallons of hydrochloric acid.

About 4:30 p.m., the wreck was reported at mile marker 101 between North Platte and Stapleton. A southbound van crossed the center line and struck a pickup head-on, said Lincoln County Sheriff’s Cpl. Season Trevino. Seeing the collision, a semi-truck driver behind the two vehicles “hit the brakes,” she said.

The semi took the ditch to avoid the wreck, spilling the acid on the highway’s surface. Trevino said she was unsure of this specific truckload of acid’s purpose, but said the acid can burn the skin, as well as cause burning in the nose, throat and lungs.

Three people were taken to Great Plains Health by ambulance with minor injuries, but no one was treated for exposure to the acid.

“The chemical spill was on the highway,” Trevino said. “It never had contact with anybody.”
