Walterboro, South Carolina
According to Trooper Hannah Wimberly, the crash happened just before 4 a.m. on Ritter Road in Colleton County.
Officials said a full-sized van was traveling down Ritter Road when it left the roadway and struck a tree. The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, sustained fatal injuries. Officials identified the driver as deputy volunteer coroner Isaac Levine. Levine was on his was back to Colleton County from Medical University Hospital at the time, officials added.
Colleton County Fire Chief Barry McRoy said Levine volunteered for the fire department for 16 years and the coroner's office for six years.
“He probably didn't have an enemy in the world. He was always upbeat, always happy and brightened your day. It's just going to be a great loss for the community,” McRoy said.
“Isaac is so well known around here. He would give you the shirt off his back. He said, ‘I don't want to get paid. I enjoy helping people,'” Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said.
Officials said Levine will be honored with a line-of-duty-death funeral.
Trooper Wimberly said the driver was wearing a seatbelt.
