Two innocent motorists were injured Friday night when they were rammed by a Daytona Beach police cruiser during a police pursuit.
Police tell WESH 2 News they authorized a pursuit after two suspects in a stolen car fired shots at the owner of the car.
The owner called police.
"When you have a violent, forcible felony with a firearm involved and a suspect who is going to shoot at people, we have no choice but to apprehend that suspect," said Deputy Chief Craig Capri with the Daytona Beach police.
While chasing the stolen vehicle west on Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard, a police officer, with activated lights and sirens, went through a red light at Nova Road, police said.
The cruiser slammed into a southbound vehicle, injuring the 75-year-old driver and a passenger. The injuries are not life-threatening, but both people were taken to the hospital. The officer, identified as Chris Pearsall, was not hurt.
