Milpitas, CA : Motorcyclist killed in one of two crashes that snarled I-880 on Tuesday morning, Nov 3, 2015
A motorcyclist was killed in one of two crashes that snarled the Tuesday morning commute along southbound Interstate 880, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The first crash was reported around 8:30 a.m. along southbound I-880 just north of Brokaw Road where a jackknifed big rig blocked all four lanes of traffic, the CHP stated. The driver of the big rig hit two others cars in the incident, but the drivers of the cars that were hit were not seriously hurt.
Just 20 minutes later, a 22-year-old San Lorenzo man, riding a 1996 Honda motorcycle just south of Dixon Landing, was allegedly splitting lanes when he collided with a Toyota Tacoma that attempted to make a lane change, according to the CHP. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and landed in the far left lane. He died at the scene, the CHP stated, but his identity has not been released pending notification of his family.
The driver of the Tacoma, 32-year-old Concord resident Romeo Lopez, was arrested on-scene for driving without a license. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail and is being held on $1,000 bail.
The CHP stated that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
The initial crash closed southbound I-880 for over two hours as crews worked to clear the big rig. The subsequent fatal crash also delayed traffic, causing what was an hourslong commute for some.
