Troy, IL : 20-year-old man died in a fatal accident on Interstate 70 on early Wednesday morning July 30th 2014
A 20-year-old man died early Wednesday morning as the result of a fatal accident on Interstate 70 near Troy.
Illinois State Police spokesman Calvin Dye said the department received an emergency call at 1:50 a.m. this morning.
According to Dye, the driver of a Chevrolet Impala was traveling westbound at mile post 18 and swerved to the right. Subsequently, the driver apparently overcorrected the swerving back to the left which resulted in his car stopping sideways, blocking both lanes of traffic.
While the car was stopped, the first of two semi-trucks struck the vehicle and continued westbound without stopping.
Only moments after the first semi hit the vehicle, a second semi-truck struck the Impala causing it to spin out of control. Both the Impala and the semi rolled into a ditch on the right side of the highway.
The driver of the Impala was pronounced dead at the scene by the Madison County Coroner's Office.
Police are investigating the possibility that the driver fell asleep while driving, Dye said.
The driver of the second semi-truck was not injured, but did lose his entire load of corn.
As of 9 a.m. I-70 was closed, but Dye said he expected it to be open soon.
The Illinois State Police do not have a description of the semi-truck that didn't stop and are asking anyone with information about it to call the them at 346-3990.
The victim's named has not yet been released.
