West Covina, CA : 95-year-old bicyclist hit by car near West Covina on Thursday morning, July 14, 2016
A 95-year-old bicyclist from Baldwin Park suffered a broken leg and other injuries after a car struck him Thursday morning.
Contrary to earlier media reports, the bicyclist did not get trapped under the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol and West Covina Fire department.
The collision happened at 6:31 a.m. on Sunset Avenue and Badillo Street which is located in the unincorporated county area near West Covina.
CHP Officer Kelly Bertsch said a sedan northbound on Sunset Avenue tried to turn right on Badillo Street and hit a bicyclist who was traveling west on Badillo Street.
The driver told the CHP she didn’t see the bicyclist before the collision, according to Bertsch.
She said the rider was thrown off the bicycle while the bike ended up under the car. Bertsch added that the helmet and knee pads the man wore probably saved him.
West Covina Fire Capt. Cory Cisneros said the bicyclist’s left leg above the ankle was broken. Cisneros said the man also suffered minor head and facial trauma as well as abrasions and lacerations to his face, legs and arms.
Cisneros described the man’s injuries as moderate. A helicopter took the injured bicyclist to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.
Bertsch said the 32-year-old Baldwin Park woman who drove the sedan and the passenger, her 7-year-old son, weren’t injured.
