WEST DES MOINES, IA : Authorities say wrong-way driver caused double fatal crash on Sunday, October, 15th 2017
A car going the wrong way on Interstate 35 crashed into another car, killing both drivers early Sunday, West Des Moines police said in a news release.
The crash happened just before 2 a.m. Sunday in the 1600 block of I-35.
Police said one car was southbound in the interstate's northbound lanes when it collided with another car.
Both drivers were killed. A passenger in the northbound car suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Police identified the wrong-way driver as 49-year-old Monte Johnson, of Hartford. The driver in the northbound lanes has been identified as 32-year-old Nripin Chinni, of West Des Moines, and his passenger, 27-year-old Durga Papina, also of West Des Moines, was taken to the hospital.
The crash caused Interstate 35 to close, but the lanes have since reopened.
Urbandale police, Des Moines police’s identification team, Norwalk police, Clive police and the Iowa State Patrol assisted at the scene.
The crash investigation remains ongoing.
