Peoria,IL : Peoria driver involved in fatal wreck in Springfield on December, Friday 1st 2017

A Peoria woman was involved in a Friday accident in Springfield in which a tow-truck driver was killed, according to Illinois State Police.

Janay L. Sheperd, 21, of Peoria was driving a Jeep west on Interstate 72 at 9:48 a.m., police said. At that time, at Mile Post 93, tow-truck driver Ronald Chaney, 56, of Springfield, was loading a disabled sedan onto a wrecker, police said.

For unknown reasons, police said, the Jeep driver veered to the right, the Jeep striking the disabled sedan and then the tow-truck driver. The Jeep rolled onto its driver side, then onto its top before skidding to a stop on the right shoulder of the interstate, police said.

The tow-truck driver, whose name was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The Jeep driver was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. A spokeswoman said she was in good condition.
