Port Allen, LA : Pedestrian killed, driver arrested after hit-and-run crash in West Baton Rouge on Saturday, 20th August, 2016
A Plaquemine man who was walking across the La. 190 Mississippi River bridge was killed early Saturday when he was struck by a drunken driver, State Police said.
Vontravis Stevens, 36, was walking in the eastbound lanes of the bridge around 2 a.m. when Benjamin Todd, who was driving east in a 2007 Ford F-150, struck Stevens, then drove away, said Trooper 1st Class Bryan Lee in a news release.
The West Baton Rouge Coroner's Office pronounced Stevens dead at the scene, Lee said. A toxicology sample of Steven's blood will be analyzed at the State Police Crime Lab to determine whether he was impaired.
About 30 minutes later, troopers received a call identifying Todd, 21, of Pride, as the driver, Lee said. Todd and his truck were found soon after at a residence in Pride.
Todd was arrested, Lee said, after his blood-alcohol content was .08 percent or higher, which is considered presumptive evidence of drunken driving in Louisiana.
Todd was booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish Jail on counts of vehicular homicide, DWI, and hit and run.
