Phoenix, AZ : 29-year-old man critical condition Thursday night after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing Scottsdale Road in Tempe on August 7, 2014
Tempe police are looking for a driver who hit a pedestrian crossing the street near Scottsdale Road & McKellips.
Officials say they are looking for a red, 2007 Dodge Durango in connection with the incident, which occurred near Weber Drive shortly after 8:30 p.m.
Sgt. Dale Hoobler said the pedestrian was not using a crosswalk when he entered Scottsdale Road and was struck by a southbound SUV that immediately fled the area.
Mark Sanelli, 32, who lives nearby, said he was headed to Tempe Marketplace when he heard the SUV's tires squeal. Sanelli said he hopes the pedestrian makes it out OK.
"It's kind of scary," he said. "Hit and runs, man. There's so many pedestrians out here, people jogging. (It's) out of control."
Hoobler said the pedestrian had multiple injuries and was in surgery at last check. Detectives, meanwhile, were checking with nearby businesses to see if they could glean any information about the driver from surveillance video.
Southbound lanes of Scottsdale Road were closed for the police investigation, but Hoobler said he expected lanes to reopen before midnight.
