A 20-year-old man died from injuries sustained during an early morning single-vehicle crash after he lost control of his car and hit the guardrail on Interstate 45.
Police say the Galveston County man was traveling south near the 500 block of Interstate 45 at about 4:42 a.m. when his Lexus went out of control, fishtailed and took out about 30 feet of guardrail. The vehicle came to rest in a grassy area near the highway, Sgt. Roberto Rodriguez said.
Police had not released the name of the driver late Saturday. He was the only occupant in the vehicle.
“We’re not sure what caused the driver to have to take such an evasive maneuver that caused him to lose control,” Rodriguez said.
It’s unclear whether speed was a factor in the crash, he said.
The driver, who was trapped inside the vehicle, had to be extracted out before being taken by ambulance to the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he was pronounced dead an hour after the initial call, Rodriguez said.
His body was sent to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s office where a full autopsy will be performed.
It’s unclear whether alcohol was a factor in the crash, Rodriguez said.
Inside and middle southbound lanes were shut down until about 7 a.m. while emergency crews processed the scene, he said.
