Fresno, CA : Woman died, child injured in the head-on crash on Highway 41 in Madera County early Saturday morning, June 18, 2016
Ruby Alvarez, 24 from Oakhurst, was identified as the driver who died in the head-on crash early Saturday morning on Highway 41 near Road 200 in Madera County.
Lucy, her 2-year-old daughter, survived the crash and was taken to Valley Children’s Hospital in critical condition. She was listed in stable condition Monday.
Alvarez’s cousin, Adriana Alvarez, posted on social media that Lucy’s major injuries included a broken leg, arm and jaw. She has been scheduled for surgery.
The community started a GoFundMe page for medical care for Lucy, funeral services for her mother, travel expenses and monetary relief for the family. The community has already contributed $2,920 out of the $5,000 goal in 16 hours.
California Highway Patrol reported Alvarez was headed south in a Honda Civic sedan at 12:50 a.m. on Saturday. She crossed into head-on traffic and struck a Nissan and a Honda Accord.
One of the vehicles caught fire, but was contained.
The three people in the two cars sustained major, but non-lethal injuries. They were transported to Community Regional Medical Center of Fresno.
Ricardo Flores, 43 of Sanger, and an unidentified 40-year-old female passenger were both in the Nissan.
Maria Medrano, 22 of Fresno, was in the Honda Accord.
CHP is investigating whether alcohol and drugs contributed to the collision, but said they may not have toxicology results for at least a week.
