Embden woman dies in head-on crash

A 22-year-old Embden woman died and three others were injured Thursday as the result of a head-on collision on Route 16, also known as New Portland Road, in Embden, an official with Somerset County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed.

Jennifer Nile was a passenger in a 2012 Malibu sedan driven by Mark Schobel, 24, of North Anson when the crash occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m., Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster said Thursday night.

Schobel was traveling east on Route 16 when he passed another vehicle, traveling into the path of a westbound 2012 Subaru Outback driven by Leon Souweine, 67, of Bangor, Lancaster said.

Souweine and his wife, Ruth Souweine, who was a passenger in the Subaru, and Schobel all were injured and were taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, Lancaster said.

Ruth Souweine and Schobel later were flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by LifeFlight, Lancaster said. Information about their medical conditions was not immediately available.

Lancaster said the road was bare when the crash happened and that speed is being considered a factor. The posted speed limit on the stretch of road where the accident happened is 50 mph, he said.

Lancaster said the air bags deployed in both vehicles and that both vehicles were demolished.

The accident is being reconstructed by the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Lancaster said. He said the Anson Fire Department assisted at the accident scene.

The accident remained under investigation Thursday night. The circumstances are being reviewed by the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office.
