INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FL : FHP continues investigation into fatal I-95 crash in Indian River County on Saturday, December 31st 2016

A Tequesta resident and woman from Vermont died in a three-car accident on Interstate 95 west of Vero Beach on Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Their 2017 Hyundai Elantra was going south "at a high rate of speed" in a 60-mph construction zone when it skidded and hit a car immediately ahead of them at 5:25 a.m., a FHP report said.
The Hyundai was hit by a third southbound car, knocking the Hyundai into a concrete barrier wall about a mile north of State Road 60.
The Hyundai driver, Gary Karl, 44, of Tequesta, was pronounced dead at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute, Fort Pierce. The passenger, Deirdre Martin, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene.
None of the occupants in the second car, a 2012 Camry, were injured. The driver of the third car, Jamie Ortiz, 37, of Fort Pierce, had minor injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and includes blood tests on Karl and Martin.
