Emergency officials say a 26-year-old man survived after a tractor trailer he was driving overturned and broke into two pieces in Colleton County.

Colleton County Fire and Rescue officials say the accident happened in the 28000 block of Lowcountry Highway in Smoaks early Thursday morning.

According to CCFR officials, the truck left the roadway at "moderate speeds" and drove through at least two residential yards, before striking several trees.

Authorities say the loaded semi-truck overturned and broke into two pieces; a press release states that fuel tanks were breached spilling a large quantity of diesel fuel on the ground.

The load of cement remained intact.

The truck driver escaped the cab and was able to walk when emergency officials arrived, according to CCFR officials.

"The patient was evaluated at the scene, then transported to Colleton Medical Center by Medic 18," states a press release by CCFR."DHEC sent representatives to the scene and the SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash."
