London, KY : Two die, one injured in head-on crash on Ky. 30 north of London on Sunday night, April 2, 2017

A head-on collision on Ky. 30 Sunday night took the lives of two men and left a woman with critical injuries.

The crash occurred approximately two miles north of London when a Chevrolet Blazer driving by 57-year-old Richard Allen Thomas of Earley Street in Corbin was traveling northbound on Ky. 30 in the southbound lane. The Blazer struck an oncoming Toyota Camry driven by 27-year-old Kevin Michael Sparkman Jr. of Hazard, Ky.

The impact caused the Blazer to overturn, blocking the southbound lane. The Toyota came to rest off the shoulder of the southbound lane.

Thomas and Sparkman were pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in Sparkman’s vehicle, 20-year-old Kelsey Shaw of Hazard, was airlifted from the scene to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for critical injuries.

The roadway was shut down for several hours while the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office conducted the accident reconstruction. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by Detective/Accident Reconstructionist Chris Edwards. He was assisted at the scene by Deputies Travis Napier, Larry Parrott, Charlie Johnson, Taylor McDaniel, Gary Mehler, Shannon Jones and Gilbert Acciardo. Also assisting at the scene were Constable Chris Webb, East Bernstadt Volunteer Fire Department, London-Laurel County Rescue Squad, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, Laurel County Volunteer Fire Department, Laurel County Public Safety, Laurel County Emergency Management, Laurel County Coroner’s Office, PHI helicopter, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

This marks the fourth traffic related deaths in the county thus far this year. The second fatality took place just six days prior when a man was killed when his ATV overturned on him in the East Bernstadt area.
