Spanish Fork, UT : Man killed in a three-vehicle crash on I-15 near Spanish Fork early Saturday morning, April 23, 2016
The southbound lanes of I-15 were closed after a fatal accident early Saturday morning.
The accident occurred at about 3:42 a.m. after a small white passenger car and 2001 GMC Sierra truck attempted to pass a 1999 Peterbilt semitruck on its left side at a high rate of speed, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. Officials said the semitruck was in the far right lane.
“The white car then came into the lanes of the semi truck causing the semi to swerve and leave the road off the right hand shoulder destroying about a hundred feet of guard rail,” a statement from UHP reads. “The semi then came back onto the road where he made contact with the dark colored pickup truck.”
The passenger of the Sierra truck, Irineo Hernandez Ambriz, 21, of Provo, died from injuries sustained during the collision, according to UHP. The driver of the Sierra truck and the driver of the semitruck were hospitalized with injuries that are not expected to be life threatening.
The names of the drivers of each vehicle involved in the accident have not yet been released.
The white vehicle observed by a witness did not stop and has not been located.
The southbound lanes of I-15 were closed as a result of the crash. UDOT estimated the closure would remain in place for five hours and the lanes reopened just before 9 a.m.
