RACINE, WI : Vehicle with nine people inside crashes into garbage truck head-on on Thursday, August 31, 2017
A vehicle carrying nine people, including at least five children, crashed into a garbage truck head-on late Thursday morning in the 1500 block of Blaine Avenue.
According to a Racine Department of Public Works staff member on the scene, the truck was picking up garbage on 15th Street and making a turn down Blaine Avenue when it collided with a silver sports utility vehicle around 11:45 a.m.
The SUV and truck came to rest slightly to the west side of the street, indicating that the vehicle may have been across the middle of the residential street, which has no center line and street parking on both sides.
A rescue worker at the scene indicated there were nine people in the SUV during the crash, including five or six children, and the vehicle did not have nine seats. There appeared to be only one child-safety seat in the vehicle.
At least one woman was transported to Ascension All Saints Hospital with injuries of unknown severity. That woman, sitting in the passenger seat, struck her head on the windshield, leaving a clear indentation. The rescue worker said that indicated that she was more than likely not wearing her seat belt.
All of the children involved appeared unharmed, although a few had ice packs given to them by firefighters on the scene. Both DPW workers operating the garbage truck were uninjured, according to the DPW employee, although a relative of one of the workers later said one went to the hospital independently with neck and back injuries.
Both vehicles suffered significant front-end damage.
