Savannah, GA : Tybee Island police officer killed in motorcycle crash on April, Saturday 8th 2017
An off-duty Tybee Island police officer was killed after his motorcycle was hit by an SUV on Saturday morning.
Savannah-Chatham police responded to a report of a motorcycle hit by an SUV on Ogeechee Road near Southwest Middle School about 9:30 a.m. The motorcyclist was traveling north on Ogeechee Road and was struck by an SUV turning east from the south bound lanes of Ogeechee Road.
The motorcyclist, off-duty officer Tron T. Lewis, 32, of the Tybee Island Police Department, succumbed to the injuries received in the crash.
Lewis had only been with the police department for a year but was well-loved by all, said Chief Bob Bryson.
“We’re devastated by the loss,” Bryson said. “He was just a great guy. It’s tragic.”
Lewis was described as a friendly officer with a smile for everyone.
“He always had a friendly smile for his fellow officers and motivated all of us to be at our best,” the police department posted in its Facebook page. “Rest easy, brother. Our hearts may be broken, but we’ll take it from here.”
Flags around Tybee Island were lowered to half staff to honor the officer, and his patrol vehicle was parked in a place of honor in front of the police department.
Other local law enforcement officers sent their condolences to the Tybee Island police department and Lewis’ family via social media.
“Our condolences to our brothers and sisters in blue,” the Savannah-Chatham police department posted on Twitter.
The driver of the SUV suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.
