Peninsula, OH : Three people, including a Peninsula police officer injured in a multi-vehicle crash on I-271 on Friday morning, February 20, 2015
A Peninsula police officer was injured when a car crashed into his cruiser on Interstate 271.
Sergeant Dan Renz, 64, was parked on the side of I-271 just north of State Route 303 around 6:30 a.m. assisting a man who had been involved in a wreck. The man, 25-year-old Zachary Woods, slid off the icy highway and hit a guardrail.
Sergeant Renz and Woods were both inside the cruiser—presumably to keep warm since temperatures at that time were well below zero—when a Honda Accord crashed into it.
Authorities said the driver of the Accord, 36-year-old Sarah Johnson of Norton, swerved and slammed into the cruiser.
Johnson was air-lifted to Summa Akron City Hospital where she was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon.
Renz, who has been with the department for more than 30 years, was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital. He was released from the hospital around 12:35 p.m.
Woods was taken to Akron General Hospital in unknown condition.
