Corpus Christi, TX : Two killed in 181 wreck on Wednesday, March 29, 2017
Two people are dead after a wreck on State Highway 181 that caused a vehicle to catch fire.
About 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, Corpus Christi police officers arrived in the 4900 block of State Highway 181 and found a white Chrysler 200 in flames. A black Chevrolet Camaro was also involved in the crash, according to a news release.
Police found Taylor Counts, 25, who drove the Camaro, and Camilo Espitia, 33, who drove the Chrysler, dead at the scene. Counts' cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and body. Espitia's cause of death is continuing to be investigated because he was inside the burning vehicle.
Counts was originally from Cedar Park, and Espitia was from Kingsville, according to the Nueces County Medical Examiners Office.
An investigation uncovered that the Chrysler was traveling the wrong way down the highway in the southbound lanes. The vehicle struck the Camaro, which was traveling the right way. Police said both drivers likely died on impact.
Corpus Christi firefighters put out the burning vehicle. The southbound lanes were closed for more than an hour.
Police have not determined why the man driving the Chrysler entered the highway going the wrong way. Full autopsies will be conducted on both drivers.
