Fort Wayne, IN : Search still on for driver in fiery crash that killed 2 on Tuesday, February 21st 2017
Police on Tuesday were still looking for the driver who walked away from a fiery three-vehicle crash that killed two people and injured three others late Monday.
The driver and a passenger who were trapped in a car after the crash in the 1800 block of West Jefferson Boulevard – on the bridge near Swinney Park – were burned beyond recognition and could not be identified, the Allen County coroner’s office said Tuesday.
“Due to the significant thermal damage to the bodies, visual identification is not possible,” Michael Burris, chief investigator at the coroner’s office, wrote in the news release. “Other means of identification are being used. Once positive identification has been made, and next of kin has been notified, the identities of the deceased, and the cause and manner of death, will be released.”
The crash occurred about 11 p.m. Witnesses reported three vehicles were involved and one of the vehicles was on fire. When the Fort Wayne Fire Department arrived, one of the vehicles was fully engulfed, Fort Wayne police said.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and the two victims were found inside the vehicle. Both died at the scene. Three additional people from the other vehicles were transported to a hospital in stable condition.
Witness told officers the driver of one of the vehicles fled the scene on foot. Police said Tuesday that person had not been positively identified.
West Jefferson Boulevard was closed to all traffic between Thieme Drive and Main Street after the crash.
