Wake Forest, NC : Two seriously injured in fiery Wake County crash on Monday morning, June 20, 2016

A fiery two-vehicle crash that injured two people and shut down a section of North Carolina Highway 96 Monday morning has resulted in one person facing a DWI charge, authorities said.

A call came in around 12:45 a.m. in reference to a serious crash at the intersection of N.C. 96 and U.S. Highway 401 in Wake Forest. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash, which involved a car and an SUV.

According to authorities, a 2014 Nissan car was traveling south on N.C. 96 when it was struck head-on by a 2001 GMC SUV. After impact, the Nissan traveled onto the westbound shoulder and came to a rest. The GMC went onto the eastbound shoulder where it struck numerous trees and then caught fire.

The driver of the Nissan has been identified as Edward Henderson, 30, of Wilson, and the driver of the GMC has been identified as Enrique Zunugagracida, 23, of Franklinton. Henderson and Zunugagracida were transported to WakeMed with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Zunugagracida was impaired at the time of the crash, authorities said. He has been charged with DWI and traveling left of center.

The road was closed for nearly four hours as crews worked the scene.
