Rome, NY : Westmoreland accident sends two to hospital on Wednesday, 24th August, 2016
A two vehicle accident in Westmoreland on Wednesday sent both drivers to the hospital.
According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, the accident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on Schieferstine Road when Nicole Bechtel, 21, of Westmoreland, crested a hill in her 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck. As Bechtel’s vehicle crested the hill, a 2010 Honda operated by Rose Woodcock, 60, of Oneida was attempting to pull out of a driveway approximately 150 feet down the road from Bechtel’s truck.
Upon seeing the Honda, Bechtel was unable to stop and drover her truck into the opposite lane to avoid striking Woodcock. Simultaneously, Woodcock accelerated her vehicle to avoid striking Bechtel, but drove into the westbound lane where both vehicles collided.
Bechtel’s truck continued about 150 feet past the point of impact where it struck a ditch and then a culvert. Woodcock’s vehicle was pushed about 50 feet where it struck a mailbox and then a fence and before overturning.
Bechtel complained of head pain and was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for treatment. She was ticketed for failing to reduce speed for a hillcrest.
Fire crews were forced to use hydraulic equipment to extricate Woodcock from her vehicle. She was also transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for chest and arm pain. She was ticketed for failing to yield the right of way.
Both are scheduled to appear in Westmoreland Town Court in September.
Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were members of the Verona Fire Department, the Westmoreland Fire Department, and the Central Oneida County Ambulance.
