WABASH, IN : Logansport man dies following crash on Sunday, 25th September 2016
A 26-year-old Logansport man died Sunday morning from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 24 near Wabash.
At about 2:10 a.m. Sept. 25, officers from the Indiana State Police and the Wabash County Sheriff's Department responded to U.S. 24 just west of Stitt Street.
After preliminary investigation, police believe 25-year-old Dakota Jackson, Kokomo, was driving a 2000 Buick Park Avenue westbound on U.S. 24 when he lost control of the vehicle, according to an ISP press release.
The Buick traveled across the grass median and the eastbound lanes of U.S. 24 and then rolled and slid across Old U.S. 24 before coming to rest, on its top, in a ditch.
A medical helicopter flew Jackson and backseat passenger Derik R. Stearns, 26, Logansport, to a Fort Wayne hospital with numerous severe injuries. Stearns died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash, according to police.
Passengers 20-year-old Brianna N. Thomas and 23-year-old Michael A. Grenier Jr., both of Peru, were transported by ambulance to a Wabash hospital. Grenier has been treated and released, the press release states.
This crash is still under investigation. At this time, ISP Trooper Jeremy Perez, who initially investigated the crash, believes the use of alcohol, excessive speed, distracted driving and unsafe lane movement contributed to this crash.
