Charlotte County , FL : One person killed after SUV Crashed at Belmont Road on Friday afternoon ,May 8th 2015

One person is dead after an SUV crashed on Bermont Road in Charlotte County Friday afternoon.

The crash happened at Bermont Road and Richard Boulevard around 2:30 p.m.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a Jeep Cherokee was going west in the eastbound lanes of Bermont Road near Richard Road. The driver heavily braked and steered the vehicle to the left.

The vehicle ran of the roadway and flipped. The Jeep struck a tree and landed at the edge of a canal.

The driver - later identified as 39-year-old Carl Ritchie - was taken to Bayfront Punta Gorda Hospital. Ritchie was pronounced dead.

Troopers are investigating the crash. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
