Orange County, FL : Two children hit by car in front of Wetherbee Elementary School on Monday afternoon, Oct 12, 2015

A vehicle struck two boys who ran into the crosswalk Monday afternoon as the crossing guards tried to stop traffic in front of Wetherbee Elementary School in southeast Orange County, officials said.

Zaid Rashaad, 11, and Saffold Mervin, 10, were taken to Nemours Children's Hospital with minor injuries, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just after 3 p.m. on Wetherbee Road and Happy Hollow Lane — near Landstar Boulevard just west of Orlando International Airport.

According to witnesses, the crossing guard stepped out into Wetherbee Road to stop eastbound and westbound traffic so the children could cross the street.

Then the boys, both from Orlando, ran across Wetherbee Road, according to FHP Sgt. Kim Montes.

Meanwhile, Neida Garcia, 66, was driving eastbound on Wetherbee Road but didn't stop.

The boys ran into the left side of her Nissan Sentra.

Neida remained at the scene. She was ticketed for failure to obey a traffic-control device.
