Winchester, VA : One driver dies, other person injured after a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 in Winchester on Wednesday, December 23, 2015

A three-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 in Winchester at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday claimed the life of one person and left a sheriff’s deputy and one other person injured.

Sgt. F.L. (Les) Tyler of the Virginia State Police said in a written statement that his agency is still investigating the cause of the crash. He identified the victim as Elsie Louise Flickenschild, 57, of New Market, Tennessee.

The injured Frederick County sheriff’s deputy was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at mile marker 314 on I-81 near the accident scene. The deputy sustained minor injuries and was taken to Winchester Medical Center.

Tyler said the crash at mile marker 313 just north of the Millwood Pike exit began with a northbound 2003 Dodge van running off the right side of I-81 and hitting a guardrail. The van, driven by Flickenschild, then crossed back over the northbound lanes and passed through the median. It continued into the southbound lane where it struck a 2011 Honda sport utility vehicle and a 2011 Freightliner tractor-trailer.

Tyler identified the driver of the Honda as Christine Elizabeth Berg, 27, of West Virginia. She was taken to Winchester Medical Center.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was Jacob Wade Harneck, 35, of Alabama, Tyler said.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, state police teams specializing in motor carrier safety and crash reconstruction and local fire and rescue units helped trooper A.P. Flanagan investigate the crash.
