Marion County, FL : 29-year-old woman killed and five other people injured when a transport van crashed outside Forest High School on Wednesday, August 24, 2016
A 29-year-old woman was killed and five other people were injured Wednesday when a special needs transport van crashed outside Forest High School.
The Florida Highway Patrol said another van was in the left turn lane to go into the school when the driver moved into the left through lane, causing a pickup truck in that lane to swerve into the right lane, where the special needs van was driving.
"The driver of the (special needs) van tried to avoid hitting the pickup truck," said FHP Captain Gregory Lamont. "The van ran off the road, came back onto the road into the right-hand lane, and then the driver overcorrected. The vehicle swerved back to the right and went up onto the north shoulder and overturned."
Several passengers were ejected from the vehicle, he said.
All six people in the van, including the driver, were taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center for treatment. Heather Baker, 29, of Ocala, was identified as the woman killed. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, said the FHP accident report.
Troopers said Virginia Bates, 79, of Ocala, set the chain reaction in motion when she changed lanes from the left turn lane going into Forest High School into the path of the pickup truck.
"We're going to be doing our investigation, trying to determine who's at fault in the crash," said Captain Lamont.
Troopers will report to the state attorney to determine whether criminal charges should be filed, he said. If not, the person or people found to be at fault could be cited for traffic violations.
