Oconee County, GA : Mother killed and her sister and five children were injured in crash on Thursday November 5 2015
A mother was killed and her sister and five children were injured Friday when their sport utility vehicle collided head-on with a tractor-trailer in Oconee County, investigators said.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after 8 a.m. Friday at S.C. 11 and Armstrong Road near Westminster. The accident remains under investigation, and troopers expect the road will be closed until at least midafternoon.
Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said Chasity Buckler, 28, of West Union died of a head injury in the crash. Buckler’s 24-year-old sister, whose identity has not been disclosed, was a passenger in the front seat of the SUV, Addis said. She and five children were sent to hospitals.
The children are all between the ages of 5 and 9. Three of them are Buckler’s biological children and two are her stepchildren, Addis said. Buckler was taking them to Fair Oak Elementary School at the time of the crash, Addis said.
According to Addis, Buckler was traveling south on S.C. 11 when she crossed the centerline and struck a northbound tractor-trailer truck just north of the Armstrong Road intersection. The truck driver was not injured.
The identities of the children and the other adults in the crash had not been disclosed as of Friday afternoon.
Oconee County Fire Chief Charlie King said the children were initially taken to Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca, but that several of them were almost immediately transferred to Greenville Memorial Hospital because of the severity of their injuries.
