Worcester, MA : 48-year-old woman killed in 4-vehicle crash at Whipple Street and Blackstone River Road on Wednesday afternoon, July 13, 2016
A 48-year-old woman was killed in a four-vehicle accident at Whipple Street and Blackstone River Road this afternoon, according to police.
A witness, Benedict Atta said he was riding his bicycle nearby when saw his mother’s good friend Joana Mensah speeding downhill on Whipple Street in her Jaguar, and sensed there was a problem.
Mr. Atta said Ms. Mensah was “moving her right hand a lot and grinding her feet,” while trying to control her car.
“It said to me that something was wrong with the car,” he said. “I know she doesn’t drive fast. She’s not a speed demon.”
Mr. Atta said Ms. Mensah’s car hit an SUV and another car at the intersection, and she was was ejected from the Jaguar, which overturned. The crash occurred about 12:30 p.m.
“I started crying and calling Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,” Mr. Atta said. He said he saw Ms. Mensah, who considered Mr. Atta a son, lying on the ground, her face and hands cut.
“I tried to talk with her, but she wouldn’t say anything,” he said. “She just stayed struggling. After a few minutes she passed out.”
Eric Doku of Worcester, one of the motorists she struck, was in a red Pontiac Vibe turning right from Blackstone River Road onto Whipple Street. He said he saw the driver of the Jaguar at the top of the hill headed to the intersection, and so he veered out of her way. But the Jaguar hit a Ford Expedition and swerved into his Pontiac.
“If it was head-on, I’d be dead, trust me,” Mr. Doku said. He complained of bruising and shock.
“She was coming top speed. I don’t know what happened," said Mr. Doku, who was en route to visit a friend at nearby Henry Terrace Apartments.
Standing next to his Pontiac, whose airbag was deployed, Mr. Doku stood with his friend from the apartment and said that, given the impact of the crash, he asked himself after the crash:
“Am I dead or alive? It made a big boom. Boom!” he exclaimed.
Mr. Doku noted that the woman wasn't wearing a seat belt. Mr. Doku said he was wearing a seat belt.
A Chevy Cruze was also hit.
Another witness, Adam Robinson, said he was driving on Whipple Street when the Jaguar behind him came flying down the street, the driver laying on her horn. He said he got out of her way. Mr. Robinson estimated the woman was driving 40 to 50 miles per hour on the neighborhood street as it approached the intersection.
Vasco Oburoni, the owner of nearby Accra Supermarket, suggested a flashing light is necessary at the intersection. He said he has seen “ a lot of accidents, almost every week.”
“This woman, I don’t know if she’s going to survive because she fell out of the car and her head hit on the street," the businessman said. "We’re just praying she survives.”
